Reverse Culture Shock

From some of the emails that have been shuffled around among members of the research team, it is apparent that some of you are experiencing a bit of reverse culture shock. Being in an entirely different environment for a few weeks is an eye-opener on one's own culture. Depending on previous travels and experiences, reverse culture shock can range from amusing to frightening. You may even feel like a foreigner in your own land.

Hi all. I was not part of the Ecuador team, but I can relate to reverse culture shock. After spending 2 weeks in Belize on an archaeological dig in '99, I returned with a new appreciation of all things American. Mostly the fact that we have so many "things". Somehow much that concerned me before my trip now seemed inconsequential. Things are no longer as important to me. I think what you are experiencing is normal after removing yourselves from our hectic industrialized lifestyle for a period of time. Enjoy your newly acquired cultural understanding and aim for a simpler life. Anthropological research is just the best way to experience life!
